Heute Morgen musste ich leider feststellen, dass ich meine Mails nicht abrufen konnte, also kurz versucht den Server anzupingen und kein Feedback bekommen. Sogar der DNS-lookup ist fehlgeschlagen, später dann die Nachricht von Server4you, dass es nach unangekündigten Wartungsarbeiten zu einem Stromausfall kam und die Notfallversorgung versagt hat. Das bedauerliche Resultat war, dass den ganzen Tag über mein vServer nicht zu erreichen war :-(
Zum Glück ist er jetzt wieder online und ich hoffe mal, dass sie daraus gelernt haben und die Backups dann zukünftig auch richtig funktionieren. Aber schon ziemlich peinlich so ein Ausfall, dass darf eigentlich nicht passieren.

I migrated my vServer from Debian to Gentoo. Okay the question is of course:

“Why?”
Well, I have been using Gentoo on my desktop for more than 4.5 years. I prefer Gentoo because of its flexibility and I do not really like Debian as well. There are also odds with Gentoo, you have to compile the whole system and that is not optimal on a vServer with not so much power but it is possible to compile everything at home and then install the binary packages on the vServer.

“How to install Gentoo on a vServer?”
My vServer is hosted by server4you.de and they do not provide Gentoo as a server image. I used this HowTo and adopted it to my needs. In short:

• you have to start the rescue system of your vServer.
• remove the old system
• copy the Gentoo vserver stage3 in place
• setup the network and sshd
• restart the vServer

Well, that’s it and you can setup everything else.
